Birds of West Virginia

West Virginia has over 350 documented species accepted by the West Virginia Bird Records Committee. Of these, over 60 are rare, 5 introduced, while 2, the passenger pigeon and ivory-billed woodpecker, have gone extinct.

The northern cardinal has been West Virginia’s state bird since 1949.
