With its great diversity in landscapes, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains in the north and the Gulf Coast in the south, Alabama boasts extensive flora and fauna. Numerous species of birds are found here, be it songbirds, waterbirds, or birds of prey. Speaking of birds of prey, the Heart of Dixie is home to several species of hawks, falcons, and other similar raptors. Quite a few come to visit in spring and winter as well.

The Buteo genus within this family include the ‘true hawks’ and buzzards. At the same time, certain members from the Accipiter genusare also considered hawks and are included in the list below.

The state has almost a dozen National Wildlife Refuges with such rich wildlife. Places like the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary, Henry Lock and Dam, and the Guntersville Lake and Dam can be an excellent start to spot one of these birds – especially the most common species like the red-shouldered hawk and bald eagles. The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge also offer a wide range of wildlife, including birds and raptors.
