Botswana is home to over 600 avian species, with even potentially more to be found as unconfirmed reports of certain birds require verification. The country’s most unique type of avifauna is the sheer number of water birds found here. These include the African Skimmer, the Pel’s Fishing Owl, the Slaty Egret, the Black Crake, and the Yellow-billed Stork.
However, the national bird of Botswana is the Kori Bustard. This ground-dwelling bird is also the largest African bird capable of flight. It has been designated as such since 2014.

The best time to see the various birds Botswana offers varies depending on the time and season. For instance, the dry season – April to October – is the ideal time to see several water birds as they assemble over the few available water sources. Alternatively, during the rainy season – November to March – many birds migrate to the country to breed, and there is an overall increase in activity. Some popular sites to go birding include the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Nata Bird Sanctuary, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and the Khwai Concession.
