Birds of New Caledonia

About 250 birds live in the island territory of New Caledonia. There is a surprising amount of diversity in the habitats, including mountains, savannas, and coastal plains.

While not an official national bird, the flightless bird Kagu is an emblem of New Caledonia. Other endemic species include the New Caledonian Imperial Pigeon, the New Caledonian Goshawk, and the Horned Parakeet.

Some of the best birding sites in New Caledonia include Parc des Grandes Fougères, Rivière Bleue Provincial Park, and Mont Koghi. The peak birdwatching season in New Caledonia generally falls during summer, from November to March.
